TAP PROJECT JAPAN is holding its feature event for the year, Road to Water, at DAIKANYAMA T-SITE GARDEN GALLERY in Tokyo this August 21-24.
TAP PROJECT JAPAN is an initiative organized by volunteers from the Japan Committee for UNICEF and the Hakuhodo DY Group to support children of the world who need clean, safe water. Started in 2009, TAP PROJECT collects donations at restaurants and cafes and each year organizes a variety of activities that offer opportunities to learn about water and call for donations.
The donations go towards activities supporting children in the Republic of Madagascar, an island country off the Southeast coast of Africa, where access to clean, safe water is difficult.
Road to Water aims to draw the attention of people living in Japan to various water-related issues by letting them experience just how hard it is for Madagascan children to carry water through a virtual experience using bucket-shaped devices fitted with sensors.
Visitors can try their hand at a game where they have to quickly deliver water to their village without spilling it from the buckets.
Players begin the game by holding a bucket in each hand in front of a screen showing a recreation of a road in Madagascar from a well to a village. While enjoying scenes from Madagascar, participants get a real feel for how hard it is to carry water and how long it takes to carry it without spilling it. They are surprised at how hard it is to walk while holding the buckets level and how much water they actually lose by walking.
Road to Water also features materials on water-related issues that directly affect Madagascan children, an exhibition on the theme “water and our everyday lives” and a recreation of an actual well built in a Madagascan elementary school using support provided until now.
In lieu of an entry fee, Road to Water participants are invited to give a voluntary donation. Donations collected by TAP PROJECT JAPAN are used in UNICEF’s water and sanitation support projects for children in the Republic of Madagascar, an island country off the Southeast coast of Africa, where just one in three people in rural areas has access to basic drinking water.
